Sequoia Grove Winery

OUR STORY

Connect. Enjoy. Inspire.

Born from our founder’s deep connection to the exploration of wines through his travels around the world, along with the undeniable draw of the inspirational spirit of Napa Valley – Sequoia Grove Winery has always centered itself around people, place, and history. Our past, present, and future are built upon a community of people who relentlessly and tirelessly pour themselves into crafting wines that not only tell a story of place, but are destined to attempt life’s greatest pleasure: enriching the lives of those we are able to share them with.

We craft Cabernet Sauvignon that showcases the Napa Valley as well as the diversity of the single-vineyard sites from which our wines are born. Each bottle is a signature of the land, the people, and the history poured into it.

HISTORY

Sequoia Grove Winery is rooted in Rutherford, the heart of the Napa Valley, recognized nearly a century ago for wines exemplifying the unique characteristic now described as “Rutherford dust” – round, fine-grained, elegant tannins. Our own estate’s wine grape growing heritage dates back more than 150 years – a true testament to the quality of the soils and ideal climate. Sequoia Grove’s founder, Jim Allen, purchased 24 acres in Rutherford, convinced that he could craft Cabernet Sauvignon that rivaled the world’s finest. Remarkably, it didn’t take long for him to reach that dream. The first Sequoia Grove Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1981, and the balanced, food-friendly style was an immediate hit. By 1985, Sequoia Grove was recognized as the “Best American Cabernet Sauvignon” and, just three years later, was named “American Winery of the Year.”

Since then, critics and consumers have praised Sequoia Grove wines. When Jim was seeking retirement, he approached his long-term partners, the Kopf family. They purchased the remaining interest in the winery and have since continually invested in our future through the purchase of additional estate vineyards, replanting of existing vineyards, state-of-the-art production facilities, and continued reimagination of our hospitality spaces.

Sequoia Grove has nearly 120 acres under vine between four estate properties located in Rutherford, Yountville, and Mt. Veeder AVAs.

SUSTAINABILITY

A Full Circle Philosophy

Our namesake, Sequoia Sempervirens trees, are also more commonly known as Coastal Redwoods. These majestic giants can live for up to 2,000 years and primarily grow in a narrow band parallel to the coast of California and southern Oregon. Our winery is fortunate to be home to 15 of these giants scattered throughout the estate, with seven of them growing in a circle. The shape of this ring symbolizes our holistic approach to sustainability, which goes far beyond caring for our environment. We know our legacy lies not only in how we care for our environment but in our people and our business as well. Our dedicated efforts have earned us Napa Green certifications for our land and winery. In 2022, Sequoia Grove became one of the first five Napa Valley wineries to be recertified under the much more stringent independent Napa Green organization.

We’ve also taken our environmental commitment beyond Napa Valley. As a 1% for the Planet member, proceeds are donated to Save the Redwoods League, which works hard to help protect the habitat for the threatened Coastal Redwoods. These significant investments, along with many other sustainability initiatives implemented in the cellar and vineyards, are aimed at ensuring we farm for the future and leave our land, our business, and our community better than we found it.
